More than 100 cities become members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities
‘We need the involvement of all levels of government to make quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all a reality by 2030, and it is at the local level that our vision is implemented. The enthusiasm about the Network is indeed demonstrating local-level commitment and support in making this vision a reality’ says Arne Carlsen, Director of UIL.
The Network has been growing rapidly since it opened for membership at the 2nd International Conference on Learning Cities in September 2015. It now consists of 115 members from 28 countries. Overwhelming interest has been shown particularly in Cameroun, Greece, Portugal and the Republic of Korea.
The UNESCO GNLC offers members the opportunity to be acquainted with best practice and tools to advance lifelong learning in their communities. Members of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities may also be motivated to aim for recognition for their actions by applying for the UNESCO Learning City Award. The next Awards will be conferred to cities that have shown exemplary progress in implementing the Key Features of Learning Cities in 2017. UNESCO is looking forward to learning more about exemplary practice at the local level and is committed to promoting the building of learning cities around the world.
