Piloting a Guidebook on Participatory Action Research in Nigeria
A workshop took place from 16 to 18 April 2014 in Abuja, Nigeria to plan the piloting of a new guidebook entitled Research to Improve Youth and Adult Literacy: Empowering Learners in a Multilingual World. Participants included representatives of the Nigerian RAYL (Revitalising Adult and Youth Literacy) project, state agency directors for adult literacy and non-formal education, universities and education providers. They received training in participatory and collaborative action research and created a strategy to use action research as a monitoring and evaluation tool for RAYL.
The guidebook, a joint publication of UIL, UNESCO Abuja and the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Africa (Dakar), offers insights into how collaborative and participatory action research can be used to develop high-quality literacy programmes in a multilingual environment. It will be field-tested in the coming months in the context of the RAYL project. This participatory research has triggered the first close collaboration between governmental institutions, universities and other players involved in youth and adult literacy in Nigeria.
