A progressive and environmentally friendly learning city
Surabaya is the capital of Indonesia’s East Java province, the region’s largest metropolitan city and home to almost 3 million people. Originally a trading and port city, it has since established itself as a centre for business, industry and education.
Vision and Motivation
Surabaya’s vision is to become a ‘smart, humane, progressive and environmentally friendly city’ that instils tradition and local culture into contemporary city life. Surabaya believes that connecting with other GNLC members and implementing the Key Features of Learning Cities will help it to reach its goal.
Challenges and Goals
To achieve its vision, the city needs to improve the quality and capacity of its human resources; this not only includes formal education, but also emotional and spiritual development. Surabaya needs to optimize the utilization of its resources; this requires urban and social infrastructure development.
Plan and Implementation
Surabaya’s Ministry of Education plays a key role in the city’s learning city development. Its activities include improving young people’s ability to compete in the job market, developing new technologies and stimulating creativity. Various public BLCs (broadband learning centres) have been established, which facilitate distance- and e-learning.
Learning activities for people of all ages are also supported by the community libraries, Rumah Bahasa and Taman Baca. Today, Surabaya has 1,438 public-reading locations. The department of culture and tourism implement cultural learning activities, while Surabaya’s social and health services promote activities to improve social cohesion.
I hope our children will achieve many accomplishments across many fields. If this happens, I will have served my primary purpose. Go, children of Surabaya, go! Because God provides every child with different talents.
