Trikala, a city full of natural resources and with a rich cultural heritage, strives to overcome social and economic constraints. To create a widespread positive culture of learning, Trikala intends to increase access to quality lifelong learning for all.
Vision and Motivation
Trikala wants to empower its citizens to deal successfully with society’s demands by providing quality lifelong learning opportunities. It hopes to tackle unemployment and improve social and civic engagement.
Challenges and Goals
Trikala hopes to improve citizens’ quality of life and boost social and economic development by addressing the following:
- The Greek economic crisis
and unemployment - Cultural prosperity
- Inclusive learning for families, communities and in the workplace
- Sustainability
Plan and Implementation
Four initiatives to increase skills and competences have been proposed:
- Educational programmes
Courses to improve knowledge and skills related to civic, social and economic perspective - Lifelong learning centres
Providing adult education as a way to develop resilience in the changing economy and labour market. The centres will also focus on active citizenship, gender equality, vulnerable groups, ICT, and distance-learning opportunities. - ‘Second chance’ schools
An innovative and flexible programme for adults who wish to complete compulsory education. - Events
Workshops and performances organized by voluntary and private organizations, individuals and NGOs, which offer learning opportunities in areas such as the arts, IT, environmental protection and the sciences.
Innovation and tradition are being combined to provide opportunities for growth and lifelong learning in Trikala. Individuals have to be willing to achieve their goals.
