Preparing for CONFINTEA VI
Preparations for the 6th International Conference on Adult Educaton (CONFINTEA VI) have been started. A first meeting of the Consultative Committee took place in Helsingor, Denmark (March 1-2, 2007).
In November 2006, the Executive Board of UNESCO requested the Director-General of UNESCO during its 175th session to make the necessary arrangements for the organization of CONFINTEA VI in 2009. The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) as UNESCO's specialized unit for literacy, non-formal education, adult and lifelong learning, will coordinate the preparation of the conference, in cooperation with UNESCO Headquarters and Regional Bureaus and the CONFINTEA VI Host Country. Against this background the first meeting of the CONFINTEA VI consultative group was hosted by the Danish National commission of UNESCO at the International People's College in Helsingor, the venue of the first CONFINTEA in 1948, on March 1-2, 2007.
The consultative group consists of representatives from UN Agencies, member states and the regions, regional and international adult education associations and UNESCO regional offices and the Education sector. The role of this group is to steer the preparatory process and to give advice in all matters related to planning the conference.
Debates focused on Vision and Overall Thematic and Conceptual Focus, the key principles for CONFINTEA VI in order to make a difference, proposed outcomes and organisational/preparatory strategies, and follow-up action.
A report on the meeting will be available soon.
