Global Alliance for Literacy – Steering Group

A Steering Group ensures the smooth functioning of the Global Alliance for Literacy. The GAL Steering Group is composed of up to 10 ministers or their representatives from the 29 GAL countries and is renewed every 2 years.

The GAL Steering Group ensures the smooth functioning of the Alliance. It is composed of up to 10 ministers or their representatives from the 29 GAL countries, who serve for a maximum of two years.

More specifically, the functions of the GAL Steering Group are to:

• provide strategic guidance on GAL’s objectives, strategic lines of action and activities;
• ensure that national youth and literacy priorities and concerns from the 29 GAL countries inform the work of GAL;
• monitor together with the GAL Secretariat the progress made in the implementation of GAL’s strategic activities;
• undertake advocacy activities that strengthen political will and that mobilize and increase human and financial resources for GAL activities;
• represent GAL at global and regional high-level meetings related to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
• articulate a role for GAL in other existing and relevant global and regional networks;
• promote and define GAL’s focus on SDG Target 4.6 and provide evidence of good practice within relevant policy-making processes at regional and national levels.
